College celebrates 181 years, Founders Weekend April 5 - 7

Gettysburg College’s founder Samuel Simon Schmucker believed in the value of an institution dedicated to advancing the cause of liberal education. This belief resulted in the granting of the College’s charter 181 years ago on April 7, 1832.

SchmuckerThis Founders Weekend, April 5 – 7, the College community will gather together to celebrate our campus’ rich history of preparing students to become leaders and active citizens in their professions, communities, nation, and the world. The ceremonies will also recognize many loyal and generous benefactors who have contributed financially to safeguard Gettysburg’s mission.

A brief program at the Peace Light, featuring Gettysburg College President Janet Morgan Riggs ’77 and adjunct instructor of Civil War Era Studies John Rudy ’07, will focus on students’ impact on their community, with special emphasis on their impact relating to the Battle of Gettysburg and related events.

Participants are invited to a Rita’s Italian Ice social in The Attic upon returning to campus, and admission will be granted with presentation of each participant’s glow stick (distributed at the Peace Light). Prizes will be raffled, and the residence hall with the greatest participation will win a pizza party. The social will also include music and great conversation.

For Gettysburg College employees, “Journey to Remember” is an excellent opportunity for purposeful exercise that can be counted as minutes for the “Spring into Fitness Challenge” or for Wellness Program points.
