“Phi Theta Kappa is a very select group,” said AIB President Nancy Williams. “They’re leaders. They’re academic all-stars. One day, they’ll probably be the CEOs of companies.”
Dave Bradley, excutive director of Meals from the Heartland and a 1976 AIB graduate, spoke at the induction ceremony on the importance of persistance to achieving success in life.
“You need education as the foundation, but that alone won’t get you there. Talent won’t get you there. You’ve got to press on. You’ve got to be the go-to person to get things done,” he said.
He also advised students to give back. “As you are getting started in business, you will want to network by getting involved in nonprofits. You’ll meet the best people, because they too have hearts that are giving.”
“The students earned this honor through academic excellence,” said Phi Theta Kappa advisor Jane DeHaven, director of Career Services at AIB. “By pledging to Phi Theta Kappa’s high standards of intellectual pursuit, ambition and ethics, they join a supportive group of like-minded peers.”
PTK members are eligible for special scholarships at AIB. Those scholarship opportunities also are available to Phi Theta Kappa members who transfer from other schools into AIB’s bachelor’s degree completion program.
Phi Theta Kappa was established in 1918 in Missouri. Today it is the largest honor society in American higher education with more than two million members and 1,200 chapters located in the United States, U.S. territories, Canada, Germany and other countries. Phi Theta Kappans must have a GPA of 3.5 or above, show good moral character and possess recognized qualities of good citizenship.
The mission of the Beta Pi Pi Chapter at AIB is to recognize and encourage academic achievement and to provide opportunities for individual growth and development through participation in honors, leadership, service and fellowship programming.
