As part of their community engagement service work, members of AIB’s student Hospitality Travel Management Association recently collected school supplies for Friends of Cozumel (http://friendsofcozumel.com/about/), an informal network of people who share a common interest in benefitting families in need in Cozumel, Mexico.
The project was founded by AIB alum Larry Pedersen of Internet Solver (formerly Advanced Network Technologies). After vacationing numerous times in Cozumel, Pedersen and his wife, Karen, bought a home there and joined others to participate in volunteer work on the island.
Back in Des Moines, Pedersen conducts a drive each summer seeking donations of school supplies for kids in Cozumel. He assists potential donors by producing an eye-popping spreadsheet listing a plethora of local stores that have specials on back-to-school supplies.
“Every Sunday, I go through the ads and see who is having sales and 5-cent or 10-cent specials, and I send that information out to our supporters,” Pedersen says.
The spreadsheet – which many parents would love to have for their own back-to-school shopping trips – includes names of stores, their prices, how many items a customer can purchase at a time and the number of each item that is needed for Pedersen’s project.
Pedersen recently returned from distributing a load of 150 backpacks and supplies to Cozumel kids.
